Clarence married Julia, who was the sister of Callie Frances Smith who married Clarence's brother John Richard "Dick" Hedrick,
below. The Hedrick & Smith farms were just down the road from each other.
Their issue Chapter 6.
The Hedrick House is still there, known as the Oakes-Hedrick-Hodges House.
Wash Hedrick purchased it in the 1890's for his family from one of the Oakes families. The
Smith House was said to be a grand two & a-half story antebellumn mansion with a full story underground brick 'dungeon'
basement. There were still chains on the walls in the 1950's where they would chain up the rebellious slaves.
The house had floor to ceiling windows & was Italianate Villa in style. It was built in the 1840's as a smaller
farmhouse & expanded in the 1850's & remodeled to the villa style in the 1880's. John C. Smith (Estelle &
Frances' father) purchased it around 1890 for his family. It stayed in the family through a Smith-Reynolds marriage.
The house was dismantled in 1986 & moved. It is said it was remodeled & doesn't look like the same
structure anymore.
The John C. Smith Family Cemetery was next to the house, about 50 yards away. The cemetery
is still there.

Notes: Dick & Frances are
buried in the J.R. Hedrick Family Plot in Oakwood Cemetery, Lanett, AL. Mary Jim is buried in Florida Hills Cemetery, Spring
Hill, FL.
The J.R. Hedrick Building on the Texas Tech University campus is named in his honor.
His early years out of school he worked on his father's farm & in the construction business in Chatham to help
support his brother Wyatt through college.
He migrated from Museville, Pittsylvania Co., VA to Lanett, Chambers Co.,
AL with his wife Fannie in 1913, where he lived for 63 years. He was drawn to the area to work for the Lanett Mill Division
of West Point Manufacturing, Inc. He met some agents of the company in Boston, MA where Wyatt was an intern architect.
Known
as "Captain Dick," he was a well respected & successful business man in his own right, with J. R. Hedrick Wood & Coal
Co., and with West Point Manufacturing, the now historic cotton textiles company that became West Point-Pepperell, now WestPoint
Stevens. He retired in 1955 as Overseer of Yards. He was in the construction end of business. The cornerstone
of the now historic Lanett Athletic Club features his name as Superintendent of Construction.
Frances was a very stately & elegant woman. She would command a room just by entering it. She was much
loved by the community, heading charitable endeavors. Sadly she lost a
battle with cancer. Over 300 people attended her funeral.
Dick
& Mary Jim were a true love story. They loved each other devotedly until the days they both died. They
absolutely adored each other. He called her "Jimmie."
She was his Private Secretary with West Point Manufacturing.
She was 26 years younger. They were in love but remained friends, as he would not divorce Fannie.
He was not that
staunch a Christian, while his wife Fannie was.
After Fannie's death they married & travelled extensively.
Mary
Jim was a delightful person, loved by many. She was famous locally for her tea parties that were held in the carriage
port of the Hedrick House.
Before Dick died he sold his house in Lanett & moved with her to Valdosta, GA, where her
sister lived. She remained there until a few years before her death, when she moved to Brooksville, FL to be close to
a nephew.
